Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina

This book should be required (not only recommended) reading for anyone involved in teaching, learning, or presenting. In other words - all of us.

Dr. John Medina provides a good and honest overview over what we know and don't know about how our brain works, how it evolves, and what we can learn from that regarding improvement of learning and everyday life. He openly admits where evidence is spotty or non-existent and recommends directions for further research. And during all the time, he manages to keep things readable and easy to understand without dumbing things down.

If you're really short on time, read at least chapter 4, but also 5 and 6.

After finishing the book, I gave it to the colleague responsible for our company's in-house training courses - who promptly gave it back to me a while later, since he ordered his own copy. He seems to have liked it :)
