I usually argue against shouting. In my experience, most speakers can't pull it off and fall back to their normal speaking voice within a few minutes. Result: The people in the back can't hear you. If you can actually pull it off, that then means that you are shouting at the poor people in the first row for an hour; which is no fun for them.

Also, when shouting/speaking louder, you lose all the options to raise or lower your voice at important points of your presentation.

Yes, a hand-held microphone can be a hassle, especially if you also use a remote. Still, I'd say the discomfort of one person (the speaker) is preferable over the discomfort of many (the audience).

Agreed, Dirk. Shouting wouldn't be good. It's just to paint how i look at using such a microphone. Actually, we had a customer event yesterday. The first speaker used a handheld microphone. Everything that could go wrong went wrong, including behaviour of the technology (connection with PC wasn't stable), holding the mic to far away and mic not following head movements. Other presenters used a clip-on microphone while yet others (including myself) didn't use one. In the ned, it wasn't necessary to use a mic. No shouting needed.
