You're right. However, sometimes this is the situation: room fixed, projector fixed on the ceiling, not just a presentation but also a live software demonstration for which a mouse is needed, connector to the beamer on the far side of the room seen from the projector and to short to reach any spot near the screen. The only solution for me was to indeed stand opposite the projection screen. Far from ideal, indeed.

That sounds like quite the challenge. An extension cable (from the laptop to the projector) may have been an option, but it's not something you usually have at hand and it could have been awkward routing it through the room. So yes, sometimes you just have to accept that things aren't going to be ideal for your audience. At least you did consider your options :)

Actually, i didn't consider asking for an extension cable. Could have worked! ;-)
