In our office we also have rooms that can be 'undivided'. In that case, there are 2 screens, so the situation is not as horrible as you described, Dirk. But from another perspective it is even worse, since there's also an audio installation (the room is rather big so a speaker probably wants to use a microphone) which works on either the right hand side audio connection or the left hand side audio connection. When the speaker walks a little bit from the left to the right, the microphone may loose it's connection temporarily. Result: at one moment you can hear the speaker loud and clear, a second later you can't hear him/her at all.

Ronald, thanks for chiming in.
I did not experience any problems with the sound in the cases I described, so it didn't even occur to me that the audio setup could also be an issue. Thanks for pointing that out!
