Not ideal indeed, but i've simply imported a presentation which i gave the name TEMPLATE. I start a new presentation by copying this template presentation first. Probably smart to have a backup of the template presentation somewhere in a folder, for in case you forget to copy first and start editing in the template presentation right away.

What i like very much is that in the new iOS version of Keynote other aspect ratios than 4x3 are supported. We have beamers and TVs which are 16x9 at the company i work for, and now i can fully make use of that.
